Sewing Desk Makeover
My first….. again I repeat, MY FIRST furniture makeover experience!!! This sewing desk makeover was a lot of work but so worth the effort and I am in love with this piece. It is perfect for my space and me needs and has personality to boot!!!
I bought this desk from my friend Amy who found it at an antique store, she sold it to me for a whopping $30 bucks! What a deal! Here is the before shot.
It was a serious yellow (sorry Amy, I know you painted it that color =).
First I stripped off all the paint .
Then sanded it down really well. Sanding sucks, not my favorite part. But a necessary part, good thing my husband doesn’t mind it so much! {wink}
My dear husband cut out the middle of the inside of the desk with his saw where the original machine was attached. I really wanted to be able to attach my sewing machine (like sewing machines of old) and have it flip down inside the desk. Wouldn’t that have been awesome? But we just couldn’t make it work. I guess sewing machines are bigger than they used to be!
After washing it all up with mineral spirits to get the sanding dust and paint flecks off, I bought a board at the hardware store the same thickness as the desk. My husband measured the square hole and cut the board to fit.
We applied wood filler around the edges of the inserted board so that it was a smooth work surface. I then primed it, painted it white and applied Polycrylic as a top coat to protect it. The original knobs were old, gold and round. I though about spray painting them but opted for new knobs to match the other furniture in my craft room.
Looking better huh! But still needed some personality.
I wanted a scroll like design on the front in a bright color. Instead of me trying to stencil it on, my supremely creative friend Marcy offered to paint it for me. She hand drew it on with a pencil.
Then painted it in pink. Are you loving it so far? I wish I was an artist, Marcy is so talented. Plus she is really sweet and nice and giving and beautiful. If she wasn’t my friend and I didn’t love her I would feel obliged to hate her out of jealousy =)!
Here is the after shot, plus a sneak peek of my FINISHED craft room!! I am so excited to share it with you, the post is coming I promise!
